Eurominutes: The full version of this episode runs 48 minutes, but for the domestic (US) market, this was cut shorter for commercials. "Eurominutes" are those 4-5 minutes that European fans got to see but US fans missed out on when the episodes originally aired. (Subsequent reruns on USANetwork and SciFi/Syfy may or may not adhere to the original domestic cut.) Huge thanks to Gillian Horvath for providing the tape of the official domestic cut of this episode, as it was released by the studio for the US stations.

~Official Eurominutes are bolded.
~Rerun on Syfy (2010) matches the official cut, with two exceptions.

[Voice-over by Joe Dawson]
He is Immortal, born in the highlands of Scotland four hundred years ago. He is not alone. There are others like him -- some good, some evil. For centuries, he has battled the forces of darkness, with holy ground his only refuge. He cannot die, unless you take his head, and with it his power. In the end, there can be only one. He is Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander.

OPENING CREDITS

TEASER

Ginny's house 1

[Keogh walks up to front door & knocks.]

Ginny - [opens door] Hello, David.

Keogh - Hi. Jill here?

Ginny - No. I don't know where she is. [tries to shut the door]

Keogh - We had a little misunderstanding. I need to talk to her.

Ginny - Well, I told you, she's not here. Don't you get it? My sister doesn't want any part of you.

Keogh - I know she's here.

Ginny - Leave her alone. [closes the door in his face]

Keogh - [goes to end of porch, sees Jill] Jill! [Jill quickly gets into parked car.] Jill, wait! [runs to car]

Jill - [closes & locks car door] No! Get away!

Keogh - [through closed window] Jill, please! I just want to talk. [Jill starts ignition. Keogh steps in front of the car.] Jill, stop the car.

Jill - No. Get out of the way!

Keogh - Jill! Come on, Jill.

Jill - No! [puts car into gear]

Keogh - Please. [Jill stomps on the accelerator.] Jill! [is hit by car, falls to the ground as Jill drives away]

ACT ONE

Street 2

[Keogh walks down sidewalk to phone booth, dials.] 1

Establishing shot: Dojo 3

Loft above dojo 0

[Phone rings.]

Anne - Duncan, telephone.

DM - [coming out of bathroom] Yeah, I noticed.

Anne - I hope you saved me some hot water.

DM - Well, I did offer to share, didn't I? [into phone] MacLeod. CUT David? It's been, uh, ages. CUT Why a church? CUT Fifteen minutes. [hangs up]

Anne - Anything wrong?

DM - No, I don't think so. Just an old friend.

Anne - Oh.

DM - Do you mind letting yourself out?

Anne - Sure. I have to be at work in about an hour.

DM - All right. [pulls on shirt, takes key from shelf] Um, here's a spare key to the elevator. Meet you later? [kisses her]

Anne - Yeah. Meet you at Joe's?

DM - Yeah, okay.

Dojo 0

[RR enters, flips on the lights, raises blinds on window. 2 Anne exits elevator.]

RR - Anne.

Anne - Oh, hi.

RR - Hi.

Anne - Uh, I was just leaving.

RR - [holds up paper bag] Donut?

Anne - Oh, no. That stuff will kill ya.

RR - Chocolate.

Anne - [interested] Really?

RR - Yeah. Go for it.

Anne - Thanks. [reaches into bag]

Jill - [enters dojo] Are you Duncan MacLeod?

Anne - You just missed him.

RR - Uh, yeah, he'll be back later. Can I tell him who's looking for him?

Jill - No.

Anne - Is there anything we can do to help?

Jill - I need to talk to Duncan MacLeod.

Anne - Well, I'm Anne and this is Richie. We're friends of his. Would you like to stay?

Jill - No, I can't.

Dojo patron - [enters dojo] Excuse me. [Jill leaves.]

RR - Strange.

Anne - Scared.

Outside church 2

[DM pulls up in T-bird, senses 'buzz'.]

Keogh - [in garden with priest] {We were talking about it last night. That'd be perfect. So that'll be fine.}

Priest - {And otherwise, I guess we can...}

Keogh - {All right. Sounds great.}

Priest - {All right then.}

Keogh - [sees DM] Duncan! Thanks for coming, man.

DM - Why are we meeting on holy ground?

Keogh - It's a matter of life and death. [smiles] I'm getting married.

DM - Really? Congratulations. That's great! I'm really happy for you.

Keogh - On Sunday. And Duncan, I want you to be my best man.

DM - Absolutely.

Flashback - Philadelphia, 1825 - street near Renquist house 4

[Super: Philadelphia, 1825]

Keogh - Thanks for coming with me, Duncan. I want you to be my best man.

DM - Let the lady say yes first, David. Where did you meet her?

Keogh - Her father's ships are bringing in the lumber for the houses that I'm building. [approaches flower vendor's cart] You should see her, Duncan. The way she laughs, the way she looks at me. She's the one. [pays for a bouquet, pats his pocket] I even brought the ring. CUT [turns to DM] Do I look all right?

DM - You did until a moment ago. [reties Keogh's tie]

Keogh - Huh. Who would have thought it? Fifty years ago, I was an indentured servant. Had to ask my master's permission to cross the street.

DM - You're nobody's indentured servant now. It's a new world. [finishes with tie] There. Now you look the perfect gentleman.

Flashback - Philadelphia, 1825 - Renquist house 4

Keogh - [as butler opens the door] Hello, Reginald.

Reginald - Good day.

Keogh - Is Miss Julia at home?

Reginald - Oh, certainly, sir. [takes DM's hat] Thank you.

Julia - [in parlor] I'm so sorry, Roger, but I've already promised Mr. Southworth. Perhaps another day. [Keogh & DM enter parlor.] How nice to see you, Mr. Keogh. [Keogh looks at Julia's other suitors & gets flustered.] What can we do for you?

Keogh - Well, I, uh-- [to Alan] I had hoped to speak to you alone, sir.

Alan - [stands up] Is there a problem? There's nothing wrong with our mahogany, I hope.

Keogh - No, no. Nothing like that. It's about -- It's about your daughter, Miss Julia.

Alan - What business could you possibly have with my daughter.

Keogh - [looks to DM for support. DM nods encouragingly.] I had hoped to discuss the possibility of marriage, sir.

Mrs. Renquist - [in background] Marriage?

Roger - Hmph.

Alan - Are you ridiculing me, or are you insane?

DM - [quietly to Keogh] Maybe this is not the right time.

Keogh - Why not? [to Alan] No, I want -- I wish -- that is to say... I wish to marry your daughter, sir.

Mrs. Renquist - Oh.

Alan - I invite you into my home and this is the advantage you take? You come in here, speak this way in front of my wife? Who do you think you are?

Keogh - I am a free man. I am a businessman, like you, and Julia and I love each other.

Alan - Leave my home.

DM - [to Keogh] Perhaps we should take our leave.

Keogh - Tell him, Julia. Tell him what you told me. Tell him how we feel.

Alan - You come from nowhere. You have no family. Do you believe I would allow my daughter to marry a tradesman? I'd just as soon she married Reginald here.

Keogh - We love each other. [moves toward Julia] Julia. [kneels beside her] You told me. You promised.

Alan - Reginald, see Mr. Keogh out.

Keogh - Tell him the truth, Julia.

Alan - Julia!

Julia - You obviously misinterpreted my kindness as affection. [stands, moves away from him]

Keogh - Julia! You love me! I love you!

Alan - [points pistol at him] I will not tell you again!

DM - We're able to find our own way out. [to Keogh] Come. [Keogh throws the bouquet down, exits.] Good day to you all.

Loft above dojo 0

Keogh - [as DM examines rocking chair] So what do you think?

DM - Well, you always were a master craftsman. It's great. [sits in chair]

Keogh - I've got a little workshop upstate. Special orders only. You know, there's a six-month waiting list for those rockers. That's how I met Jill. She's a decorator. She asked me to bump one of her clients up to the head of the list.

DM - Did you?

Keogh - Maybe. Okay. Yeah, I did. She took me out to dinner to thank me. Guess that was about a year ago now. She practically had to drag me out of that workshop. It's been a long time for me, Duncan. I thought it would never happen to me again.

DM - Well, you were due. [Both sense 'buzz'.] That'll be Richie.

Keogh - Your student?

DM - Yeah.

Keogh - [as RR exits elevator] Lucky guy. [holds his hand out to RR] David Keogh.

RR - Richie Ryan. Nice to meet you. [shakes his hand] You guys hungry? You want some food?

DM - No, we're meeting Anne in a couple of minutes.

RR - Can I grab one of these? [picks up bowl]

DM - Help yourself.

RR - Thanks. [dumps fries into bowl] So, did that woman come by?

DM - Who?

RR - Oh, Anne didn't call you?

DM - No.

RR - This woman stopped by this morning after you left. She said she needed to talk to you, but wouldn't say what it was about.

DM - She leave a name?

RR - No. She wouldn't even come in the door.

Keogh - What did she look like?

RR - In her twenties. Brunette. Really cute. Scared to death. [to DM] Sound familiar?

DM - No. If she comes by again, get her to wait.

RR - You got it.

DM - Be back in about an hour. [to Keogh] Ready?

Keogh - You know, actually, I'm wiped. I don't really feel like going back to Jill's place. Is it okay if I crash here for a little while, catch up with you later?

DM - You sure?

Keogh - Yeah, if you don't mind.

DM - Well, make yourself at home. [as he exits] Richie?

RR - Yo.

DM - Leave the place clean. [goes out side door]

RR - Sure.

Keogh - [about DM] One in a million.

RR - You got that right.

Keogh - I wish the guy who found me would've been more like him.

RR - It wasn't Mac?

Keogh - No. He wasn't my teacher, but he sure taught me a lot. When I was born, you could buy an eight-year-old boy from the orphanage for less than the price of a pig, and bind him in an apprenticeship like a slave until he was twenty-one. After I changed... the Immortal that found me treated me the same way -- like a pack animal. Duncan was the first person I ever met that treated me like I was worth something.

RR - I've been there, man.

Outside dojo 2

[DM gets into T-bird & drives away. Jill walks down sidewalk toward dojo.]

ACT TWO

Loft above dojo 0

[Keogh, sitting in windowsill, whittling, looks out window, puts down piece of wood, grabs his coat & exits loft out side door.]

Dojo 0

RR - [exits elevator as Jill enters dojo] You're back! Come in.

Jill - Is he here? Duncan MacLeod?

RR - I hate to say it, but you just missed him again. I told him you came by, though, and he said to wait. I'm really sorry. Is there, uh, something I can do for you?

Jill - He's the only one who can help me.

RR - Hmm. Okay.

Keogh - [enters dojo] Jill! Sweetheart, I'm glad you came by. I went by the church this morning, and I talked to Pastor Reaves. We're all set for Sunday.

Jill - Get away from me!

RR - Hey, David! What's up, man?

Keogh - It's wedding jitters. I had them myself. [to Jill] Go back to your place, and I'll give you a nice massage.

Jill - Don't! You're not listening to me, David!

RR - David, let's take it easy. [Keogh elbows him hard in the belly.] Ugh! David, I don't think she wants to go with you, man.

Keogh - Get out of my way.

Jill - David, stop this!

RR - Let's talk about this, man?

Keogh - I said move. [shoves RR. RR takes Keogh down. Jill runs out.] Jill!

RR - Now, look, let's just calm down. Mac will be back soon. We'll sort this thing out. [Keogh pulls his sword.] Don't do this, David.

Keogh - Get between us again, and I'll kill you. [leaves]

Joe's Bar 0

Anne - So how long have you known him for?

Waitress - [sets drink in front of DM] There you go.

DM - Years.

Anne - Really? Well, I can't wait to meet him. How formal is it?

DM - I'm not sure.

Anne - What time is it?

DM - Uh... I don't know, actually.

Anne - CUT You have a thing about weddings, don't you?

DM - I love weddings.

Anne - Oh, well, where I come from, the best man usually knows these things.

DM - I only found out a couple of hours ago.

Anne - Okay.

DM - Okay.

Anne - You ever been married before?

DM - Nope. You?

Anne - No. Ever come close?

DM - A couple of times.

Anne - Yeah? Me, too. How come you didn't?

DM - Ah, just didn't work out.

Anne - Why is that?

DM - You know, I guess I'd better be going. I'm sure there's loads of things I've gotta do before Sunday.

Anne - Duncan, if you don't feel like talking about this, it's really okay.

DM - It's not that I don't want to talk about it...

Anne - Duncan.

DM - Someday. [kisses her] I promise.

Loft above dojo 0

DM - This doesn't make any sense, Richie. They're supposed to be getting married.

RR - Not unless it's a shotgun wedding. I'm telling you, Mac, she doesn't want anything to do with him.

DM - I'll talk to him.

RR - Well, if I were you, I'd be careful. He's not pulling his punches. I think he broke some ribs.

DM - You'll heal.

RR - I know. That's not what I mean. Mac, you don't understand. One minute this guy was there, then the next -- boom! He's trying to take my head. And he's not kidding around. I mean, this girl came in, and he just freaked. He totally lost it. Now, what the hell is this all about?

Flashback - Pacific Northwest, 1882 - town square 5

[Super: Pacific Northwest, 1882]

[Townspeople are dancing a square dance accompanied by fiddles & other instruments. DM & Sarah are partnered together.]

Caller - Here we go! Ho! Bow to your partner. Do-si-do. [DM & Sarah do-si-do together.] {??} Sashay down the line!

[DM & Sarah stand opposite each other, clapping in time to the music as pairs dance together between the two lines of participants, then DM & Sarah take their turn 'sashaying down the line'.]

Caller - Back to the start and do-si-do. [Everyone do-si-do's with their partner again.] One more time down the line.

[Pairs dance down the line again. The musicians continue playing as other townspeople look on. DM & Sarah take their turn sashaying again. 3 A white-bearded gentleman watches the dancers, bobbing his head to the music. The musicians continue playing.]

Caller - Back to the start and do-si-do. [The dancers continue dancing.] One more time down the line. 4 (The audio, including these lines, from the cut scene above overlays the shortened scene in the domestic version.)

[Some kids set off firecrackers in a nearby yard as DM & Sarah take a break at the refreshments table.]

Sarah - Oh, it's a long time since I danced.

DM - Well, you'd never know it.

Sarah - Flatterer.

DM - Well, my apologies. [hands her a glass of lemonade]

Sarah - I like it.

DM - Have I told you how happy you make me?

Sarah - In the past two months, about a half a dozen times, but I don't remember. You'd better tell me again.

DM - I'm serious. A few years ago, I lost someone.

<Flashback - Lakota Sioux Camp, 1872 - camp by lake CUT
(from "Line of Fire")

Kahani - [runs up to Little Deer holding out row of trout strung on a willow stick] Mama, look what we caught!

Little Deer - Oh! It looks like MacLeod taught you well today, huh?

DM - But MacLeod almost went swimming.

Kahani - And then we saw a moose! And an eagle! [turns to DM] Tomorrow we hunt the bear. Please?

DM - Uh...

Little Deer - I think you'd better just stick with the fish.

Kahani - I'm not afraid of the bear! See what MacLeod gave me? [holds out amulet, then pulls it away as Little Deer reaches for it] It's very strong medicine. Only for warriors. [to DM] What about the bear?

DM - Well, first the deer... then we'll hunt the bear. Go on. Go practice your bow. [gives Kahani a playful slap on the rump & the boy runs off] You and Kahani are all I'll ever need. [They kiss.]

Little Deer - You're so handsome... sometimes I forget that you're really a white man.

DM - Like the bluecoats?

Little Deer - I watch you when you can't sleep at night. I know that you're thinking about them.

DM - They're getting closer every day.

Little Deer - This is a wide land. If the soldiers come, we'll just move. How much room do they want?

DM - As much as they can take.

Little Deer - I think that you are too serious.

[As they kiss again, Kahani jumps on DM, roaring like a bear.]

DM - Oh, Kahani! I thought I told you to go play with your bow. [wrestles with him]

Flashback - Lakota Sioux Camp, 1872
(from "Line of Fire")

[DM reaches the ruins of the village & dismounts. He crosses the shallow river and kneels beside the body of one of the braves. He finds Little Deer and rolls her body onto his lap, cradling her.]>

Flashback - Pacific Northwest, 1882 - town square 5

(resume previous scene) 5

DM - I've been on my own ever since. I never thought I'd feel this way again.

Sarah - And how do you feel?

DM - Like I'm alive. Like I'm not alone.

Sarah - You're not alone, Duncan.

DM - I wouldn't want to lose you, Sarah.

Sarah - Let's go home.

Flashback - Pacific Northwest, 1882 - DM's room, night 0

[DM & Sarah kiss passionately in his bed and make love.]

[later]

Sarah - I could stay like this forever.

DM - Let's. A

Sarah - What?

DM - Stay this way forever.

Sarah - That was just silly talk.

DM - We could get married. We could buy the old Allen house, be together.

Sarah - We are together.

DM - We could honeymoon in Paris... or China. I could leave the newspaper. There are things about me you have to know--

Sarah - Duncan, I don't have to know. There is no past. We didn't exist until now.

DM - What about our future? What about tomorrow?

Sarah - No, no tomorrow. No future, no past. I know everything I need to know, right here, right now. No more questions.

Flashback - Pacific Northwest, 1882 - saloon, night 5

Patron - All right.

Saloon girl - Hi, guys.

Patron - How're you doing?

DM - Hey, Jake. Give me one of your finest whiskeys, please.

Jake - [quietly, as he pours] Fella at the end, he's been asking about Sarah. Says he's family.

DM - [downs his whiskey, goes over to Henry] Name's Duncan MacLeod. I hear you're looking for Sarah Carter?

Henry - About right. You know her?

DM - Yeah, I know her. [holds out his hand] Duncan MacLeod.

Henry - [smiles, shakes his hand] Henry Carter.

DM - You her brother?

Henry - Nope. Husband.

DM - Sarah ain't married.

Henry - I got the ring. I got the minister's word.

DM - You're a liar.

Henry - You crazy? She's my wife. I've come to take her home.

DM - You're not taking her anywhere!

Henry - The hell I'm not!

[They begin fighting.]

Jake - [to piano player] Get the sheriff, and get Sarah!

DM - She's not your wife! Don't you touch her!

Henry - She's my wife.

DM - Dirty {liar}! [keeps hitting him] Don't you ever touch her!

Sarah - [runs in] Duncan! Duncan!

DM - Don't you ever touch her!

Patron - Get off of him!

Sarah - Stop! [pulls him away, kneels by Henry] Henry. Henry, are you all right?

Henry - Yes.

DM - Sarah?

Sarah - [turns to DM] What did you do? Jake, help me get him outside to the wagon.

DM - Sarah, you can't leave.

Sarah - He's my husband.

DM - But you don't love him.

Sarah - I married him. It's not his fault I wasn't cut out to be a farmer's wife. He's a good man, and he's always been good to me.

DM - What about us?

Sarah - There is no us.

DM - Sarah, I love you.

Sarah - You love me so much, you almost killed him!

DM - [as she leaves] Sarah...

Sarah - I'm sorry, Duncan.

DM - Sarah!

Sarah - Good-bye! [leaves]

Empty dojo 0

<[DM, bare-chested & wearing black gi pants, performs kata.] CUT

DM - [voice-over] Work through the anger. Work through the pain. I thought you were gone. A hundred years of forgetting, and it all comes back. Why is it I can still taste you? David knows -- the thoughts, the pain... the obsession. He won't let it go. He has to.>

[later]

DM - He wasn't at Jill's. I drove up to his workshop, but he wasn't there. He's probably out looking for her.

RR - Well, let's hope he doesn't find her.

DM - I just wish we could talk to her, find out what happened.

RR - [points behind him] Now's your chance.

[Jill enters dojo.]

ACT THREE

Loft above dojo 0

Jill - [as DM hands her a drink] Thanks. Did he tell you how we met?

DM - Yeah.

Jill - His woodwork. I'd never seen anything like it. I told him he must have a very old soul to understand wood like that. Little did I know. We were happy. Everything seemed so perfect. Then one day I came home, and he said, "Honey, come here. I have something to show you." And then he... took a knife, and he--

DM - Then he healed.

Jill - He said I had to know... and I wish he'd never told me. B

DM - He loves you. He had to tell you.

Jill - Mr. MacLeod, I have a picture of how I want my life to be.

DM - Duncan.

Jill - [nods in acknowledgement] Kids, grandkids... a family. It may sound stupid, but it's what I see.

RR - So you called it off.

Jill - But he won't let me, and he won't leave me alone. He nearly beat a guy to death for just talking to me. He told me that you're like him. He trusts you, respects you, so he'll listen to you. You're my only hope. You'll explain this to him, won't you?

DM - I'll try. [senses 'buzz', motions to RR with his head just before knock at door. RR goes to answer door.] You'll be fine.

Keogh - [enters loft] Where is she? Jill! Thank God you're all right. I was worried about you. [to DM] What's she doing here?

DM - We've got to talk, David.

Keogh - There's nothing to talk about. Jill, come on. Let's go home.

DM - David, stop it.

Keogh - Stop what? What's going on here?

RR - Give it a rest, Dave.

DM - [waves him silent] Nothing's going on here. Jill just wanted me to talk to you.

Keogh - I think she can talk to me herself.

DM - She's tried that, David. David, she doesn't want to marry you. She wants you to leave her alone.

Keogh - How do you know what she wants? Jill... I know it's gonna take a little getting used to, but we'll work it out.

DM - She can't do it, David.

Keogh - Jill, I need you. All I want is for us to be together. You said you loved me.

RR - She said she wasn't interested.

Keogh - Get your hands off her!

DM - David! [grabs him, pulls him away]

Keogh - She's mine, goddamn it!

Jill - Stop it, David!

DM - Enough!

RR - David.

Jill - David, stop it!

Anne - [arrives on elevator] Hi! [walks forward] Well, don't all speak at once.

Keogh - Come on, Jill. Let's go.

Jill - No.

DM - David, stop doing this. Can't you see what you're doing?

Keogh - I'm not doing anything but trying to take my wife home.

Anne - [steps forward to Jill] Hi, I'm Anne. We met this morning. Would you like to come back to my place? We can talk.

DM - Uh, Anne, I don't think that's a good idea, for you to get in the middle of this.

Anne - I think it's best. [to Jill] What do you say?

Keogh - Like hell!

Jill - Yeah, I think I'd like that.

Anne - Okay.

DM - [keeps Keogh from following them] No, David.

Keogh - Wait. Please!

DM - No.

Keogh - I need you!

DM - No.

Keogh - Jill! MacLeod, don't do this to me! [Jill & Anne enter elevator.] No! [Elevator descends, DM lets go of Keogh.] If I could just talk to her, I could get her to understand.

DM - She can't handle it, David.

Keogh - She'll learn.

DM - She won't learn. She doesn't want to learn. You can't force her to marry you.

Keogh - You don't know that. She's not your wife.

DM - She's not yours either, David.

Flashback - Pacific Northwest, 1882 - farmhouse, a few days later 6

[Sarah is pumping water into a wooden bucket as DM rides up & dismounts.]

Sarah - Go away, Duncan.

DM - I just want to talk.

Sarah - There's nothing to talk about.

DM - Sarah, please.

Henry - [comes out on porch with shotgun] Mister, get back on your horse and get off my land.

DM - Sarah, please.

Sarah - Go home.

DM - Come with me. I left the newspaper. We can be together.

Sarah - It's over.

DM - No, it's not.

Henry - You heard her. Now go.

DM - It can't be, Sarah. You love me.

Henry - I told you to stay away from her!

Sarah - Please... go away.

DM - [takes a step forward] I can't.

Henry - Another step and you're a dead man!

Sarah - No!

[DM takes another step forward. Henry shoots him in the chest, killing him.]

Henry - It's over. [goes back inside]

[Sarah kneels next to DM's body for a moment, then goes to get a shovel.]

DM - [revives] Sarah? [sits up] Sarah! [Sarah gasps, turns around as DM gets to his feet.] Don't be afraid. Listen to me. Let me explain. [walks slowly toward her] I wanted to tell you. I wanted you to know everything about me.

Sarah - No, I don't want to know.

DM - I love you, Sarah.

Sarah - Please... whoever you are, WHATever you are, if you do love me, you'll go away and leave me in peace! [runs for the house, crying]

DM - Sarah!

[Sarah goes inside. DM goes back to his horse & rides away.]

Anne's place, morning 7

Anne - [hands Jill a mug] Here. Have a sip of that.

Jill - Thanks.

Anne - Did you sleep okay last night?

Jill - Not so great.

Anne - Do you want to talk?

Jill - I don't think you'd believe me.

Anne - Try me. Sometimes it helps.

Jill - Really, I don't think you want to know. And trust me, not knowing is better.

Anne - I don't believe that. CUT Look, I know that, uh, things must seem really bad for you right now, but I've seen many women in the same spot that you're in, and you don't have to be afraid of him. There are things you can do.

Jill - David and Duncan aren't like other guys.

Anne - What do you mean?

[Before Jill can answer, they hear knocking at the front door. Anne goes to answer the door & returns with DM.]

DM - We have to go.

Anne - Why?

DM - Because David left my apartment an hour ago. He'll find her.

Anne - He doesn't know where I live, does he?

DM - But he knows who you are. He'll find out. [to Jill] Is there anywhere you can go while I handle this?

Jill - He's never going to stop. Never. He's going to keep following me. You know this.

DM - I'll talk to him again, Jill. CUT

Anne - She does not have to keep running away from this guy, all right? Now, we can call the police and get a restraining order.

Jill - The police can't stop him. [to DM] There's only one thing that can stop him, and you know it. You have to.

Anne - What is she talking about?

Jill - Are you going to do it or not?

Anne - Do what?

DM - I'll make him see reason. I'll try and keep him away from you.

Jill - [sighs] You're not gonna do it.

Anne - All right, this is ridiculous. I'm calling the police.

DM - Anne, don't.

Anne - It is the only way, Duncan. You think talking is going to stop this guy? If you think that, why don't you spend a Saturday night at the emergency ward with me. These guys do not stop until somebody is dead.

DM - [takes phone away from her] I said don't.

[Door closes behind them. They turn -- Jill is gone. DM throws his hands in the air, then goes after her.]

ACT FOUR

Jill's apartment 8

[Jill exits elevator on her floor, goes to unlock her front door & finds it already unlocked. Inside, Keogh is whittling by the couch, hears the door open.]

Keogh - Jill?

[Jill runs down the hallway, breaks the glass on a wall-mounted fire box with her elbow. As Keogh approaches the apartment's front door, Jill grabs the axe out of the box & goes back to the door. Keogh opens the door just as she reaches for the handle. She swings the axe, hits the door with it. Keogh takes it away from her. He pulls her inside & locks the front door.]

Keogh - It's okay. I understand. [Jill backs away from him, terrified.] You never have to be afraid of me. Look, I can't help being who I am, Jill. [follows her through the apartment, carrying the axe] Just because we're different doesn't mean we can't be together.

Jill - [reaches balcony door] No. Please, just leave me alone.

Keogh - [drops the axe, holds out his hands] We can make it okay. Just talk to me.

Jill - I don't want to talk. Don't you get it? CUT I just want it to be over.

Keogh - It's that woman at MacLeod's, isn't it? She thinks there's something wrong with me. [As Keogh talks, Jill opens door & goes out onto balcony.] Jill. We'll talk it out. Just come back inside.

Jill - No.

Keogh - [explodes] I SAID COME BACK INSIDE!

[Jill climbs over balcony rail, knocking a potted plant off the ledge. Meanwhile, DM reaches the apartment building, enters.]

Keogh - [calm again] Come back over. Jill, please. Jill, you're going to hurt yourself out there.

Jill - [moving away from him along the ledge] No!

[DM breaks open apartment's front door & enters.]

Keogh - [moves closer] Jill? Jill.

Jill - [crying, clutching the edge of the balcony] Oh, God.

DM - David! [Keogh turns toward him.] Get back inside. [pulls Keogh away from Jill, pushes him back through balcony door] Stay there.

Jill - [looks down] Oh!

DM - Jill, come back over.

Jill - [shakes her head] He won't leave me alone.

DM - Yes, he will, Jill. I'll make sure that he will. Come back.

Jill - [too scared to move] I can't.

DM - [moves closer] Yes, you can. Just give me your hand. [holds his hand out & she slowly reaches for it] That's it.

Keogh - [lunges forward] I've got you! [Jill screams, loses her balance, falls off the ledge.] Jill! [looks over railing at Jill's body on the sidewalk below] I didn't mean this. [DM pulls him back inside the apartment.] Why? All I ever wanted was to have what other people have. What do I do now?

DM - You walk out with me, right now.

Keogh - You always told me we could have real lives, real happiness. It was a lie. You never wanted me to have her. This is what you wanted.

DM - David. You know that's not true.

Keogh - Liar! [pushes him away & draws his sword, attacking him] Were you jealous? Is that what it was? CUT [They fight their way out behind the building.]

DM - David, stop it!

Keogh - Everything was fine until you interfered.

DM - Listen to yourself. Everything wasn't fine!

Keogh - You lying bastard! CUT [cuts DM's arm, sends him rolling]

DM - [gets back up, continues fighting, knocks Keogh down] Put the sword down.

Keogh - Go to hell! [DM raises his sword over his head.] Finish it, MacLeod, because if you don't, I'm coming for you.

DM - [lowers his sword, picks up Keogh's & throws it aside] Then you come for me. [walks away]

TAG

Loft above dojo, night 0

Anne - [raises elevator grate, enters loft, goes to where DM is sitting by window] You okay?

DM - I should have stopped him. I should have gotten there sooner.

Anne - Duncan, it was an accident.

DM - Yeah, but I keep thinking, there's something else I could have done, found the right thing to say. I--

Anne - Shh. It's okay.

DM - He wasn't always like that. He just needed so much.

Anne - Where is he now?

DM - I don't know.

Anne - Are you going to try to find him?

DM - No.
