[Voice-over by Duncan MacLeod]
I was born four hundred years ago in the Highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal, and I am not alone. Now is the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword will release the power of the Quickening. In the end, there can be only one.

OPENING CREDITS

TEASER

Establishing shot: Quay by barge 1

Inside barge 1

[DM & Tessa roll around on bed, tangled in the sheets, enjoying themselves. Tessa giggles as they roll off far edge of bed onto floor. DM senses 'buzz' & sits up.]

Tessa - What is it? An Immortal?

DM - Yeah. [wraps bedspread around torso & picks up sword]

Fitz - [knocks on door] MacLeod? Why can't you live in an apartment like everybody else?

DM - Fitzcairn?

Fitz - [opens door, looks inside] Oh, excuse me. I hope that sword isn't for me.

DM - It is if you keep staring. [Fitz keeps looking at Tessa.] Hey!

Fitz - Oh, forgive me, my lady.

DM - That's Tessa.

Fitz - Hugh Fitzcairn. I was so taken with your loveliness.

Tessa - [trying to put on robe while staying covered by sheet] Well, thank you, kind sir.

Fitz - Kind... and brave. Did Duncan ever tell you about the time--

DM - No, but I'm sure you will. So why don't you go, uh, on deck, and I'll meet you up there in a second. [to Tessa after Fitz leaves] That's Fitz.

Barge - on deck 1

Fitz - Mead... the honeyed nectar of the gods. I haven't tasted this since King Richard's day. Where on earth do you find it?

DM - Darius brews it himself.

Fitz - Oh, Brother Darius. Well, he hasn't lost his brew master's touch.

DM - No.

Fitz - You know, I still can't imagine an Immortal as a priest. I mean, the religion I can understand, but giving up women? Has the man gone completely mad? [They laugh.]

DM - So what brings you here?

Fitz - Yeah... well, some friends -- all Immortals -- have recently gone missing.

DM - Well, it's the time of the Gathering.

Fitz - One Immortal goes missing, granted, it could be one of us took his head, but three? Where did they go? What happened to the bodies?

DM - Have you spoken to all of them recently?

Fitz - Yeah, except Thackery. We were due to meet in Dublin on the day he disappeared. He said he had something to show me, something he'd never seen before. CUT

<DM - You know, that's -- that's strange. I spoke to Darius the other day. He said he'd had a dream about Thackery.

Fitz - Don't tell me he still thinks he's having dreams that foretell the future?

DM - Oh, it was probably a throwback from his misspent youth.

Fitz - Did he say what it was about?

DM - Ah, this and that. It was mainly about his death.>

Outside St. Joseph's Chapel 2

[A silver van drives up, parks on street by chapel. Horton & four Hunters get out, walk toward the church. Horton pauses for a moment, looks around, nods decisively, & moves forward again. The others follow.]

St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory

[Scene borrowed from "For Tomorrow We Die"] CUT

[Darius walks over to desk, sits down, lowers head to clasped hands, then looks up as he hears chapel door open -- in original scene, he looks up as he senses DM's 'buzz'.]

St. Joseph's Chapel - entrance 2

[Horton & two Hunters enter chapel & walk toward rectory.]

[telephone rings]

Inside barge

DM - [holding phone, listens to line ringing, hangs up phone] He's not answering.

[DM & Fitz exchange a look, then move quickly for the door.]

Outside St. Joseph's Chapel 2

CUT

[Hunters' van peels away from curb and drives off.3 Seconds later, DM drives up with Fitz. They get out & walk toward church.]

DM - I don't feel him.

Fitz - He's not here.

DM - He's always here.

Inside St. Joseph's Chapel 2

[DM enters chapel, starts picking up knocked-over chairs. He reaches front of chapel & sees Darius' body lying off to one side.]

DM - [runs toward body] Darius! Darius!

ACT ONE

[short time later]

Fitz - He must have put up a tremendous fight. Yes. The world will truly be a darker place without you, my friend.

DM - I didn't believe his premonition. I just... never thought he'd... no one's to know what happened here.

Fitz - The police?

DM - They won't do anything about him being missing for a couple of days. Once I've dealt with whoever killed him--

Fitz - MacLeod, once WE'VE dealt with whoever.

DM - Okay, once we've dealt with whoever killed him, we'll give him a decent funeral.

Fitz - You know, this doesn't make any sense. This is holy ground. No Immortal would {kill him} here.

DM - Somebody did.

Establishing shot: Quay by barge 1

<Inside barge CUT

Tessa - I can't believe he's gone.

Fitz - Yes, he'll be sadly missed. He was one of the best of us. I made some notes of my conversations with Thackery. They're back at the hotel. They're not much, but--

DM - [putting on coat] It's a start.

Tessa - I'm so sorry, Duncan. Do you have any idea who?

DM - No.

RR - [enters] Yo, my friends, what's happening? [sees Fitz] Oh, company. [to Fitz] Hi. It's nice to meet you. I'm Richie.

Fitz - [shakes RR's hand] Hugh Fitzcairn.

RR - Pleasure. [to DM] You are not going to believe what happened by me today. [notices everyone's somber expressions] What is going on here? What's with all the long faces? What happened, did somebody die? What's the story?

[DM leans forward, whispers in his ear.]

RR - [quietly] I'm sorry. Look, is there something I can do? Let me -- Let me do something. Let me help you.

Fitz - Your intentions are most honorable, young man. This is best left to Duncan and myself.

RR - [as DM & Fitz leave] All right, okay. It's, uh, it's your situation. [to Tessa] I never thought one of the good guys would lose.>

Outside hotel 4

Fitz - You know, if mortals did kill Darius, you don't think it's a bit of a coincidence that they beheaded him?

DM - Unless they know about us.

Fitz - Now that IS a troubling thought.

Inside hotel 5

Concierge - [as Fitz & DM enter] Monsieur Fitzcairn, monsieur.

[Fitz starts to lead DM up stairs, then stops when he sees man sitting in chair on landing above them. The two Immortals exchange unspoken signals, & DM continues up stairs while Fitz stays where he is. DM crosses in front of seated Hunter & starts up next flight of stairs. Hunter stands & follows him.]

Hunter - [taps DM on shoulder] Excuse me, sir.

DM - Don't touch me.

[Hunter grabs DM's arm. DM turns & punches him in the face, knocking him down the stairs. As DM continues up stairs, three more men come from landing above.]

DM - Can we talk?

CUT

[He grapples briefly with first man & tosses him down the stairs, then starts fighting with other two. Fitz runs up stairs to help. All four men get away & run out of hotel.4 DM & Fitz follow.]

Outside hotel 4

CUT

<[The Hunters are out of sight, so DM & Fitz split up. DM hears car starting & sees men jumping into Hunters' van. As it drives away, DM manages to pull one man from van. They fight, and the man runs.]>

Nearby street 6

[DM chases the man through the streets, losing sight of him. The man jumps out & attacks DM, & DM pins him against a tree.]

DM - Who sent you? [The man struggles but doesn't answer.] Who sent you? [holds man's knife against his chest] Talk to me!

[With a manic expression, the man grasps knife & pulls it into his chest, killing himself.]

DM - [stunned] Why? [begins searching man's clothes] Why? [sees blue tattoo on man's wrist]

Flashback - Florence, Italy - 1639 8

Beggar - [as Fitz gives him a coin] Grazie, signor.

Translation: Grazie, signor. - Thank you, sir.

Fitz - There's a ship for England, sails at dawn. <We should be aboard. CUT

DM - You worry too much, my friend.7 Actually, I think we should stay for at least another two days.>

Fitz - MacLeod, this is serious. Our service to the Duke di Milano is finished. Our work is done.

DM - But he's still in danger.

Fitz - We brought him here safely. Oh, I see. Is it the Duke you're worried about or his daughter?

DM - Well, twice I've intercepted poison meant for him.

Fitz - 'Tis well you have a cast iron stomach, my friend.

DM - Well, as they say, it runs in the family.

Fitz - Aye, but if we stay, it's only a matter of time before his enemies come looking for us. [to street vendor] Nice pipes.

[As DM & Fitz continue down street, beggar looks briefly at the pipes on display, then follows the two Immortals. Medallion around his neck bears same symbol as tattoo.]

Fitz - My instinct tells me we should leave.

DM - Since when have you been bothered by a good fight?

Fitz - Oh, it's not the fight I hate. It's the waiting for it.

Man - Death to the Duke!

[DM & Fitz draw their swords, start fighting three men. DM wounds one & fights second while Fitz engages third. Beggar slinks down alley & watches. Fitz's opponent manages to wound him.]

DM - [kills opponent & turns to watch Fitz] You having trouble, Fitzcairn? [to Fitz's opponent] Buon giorno! [One quick exchange of blows & he kills the man. The last man (the one DM wounded at beginning of fight) throws knife at them & runs off. Knife hits beggar, killing him. DM investigates & finds medallion hanging from his neck.]

Translation: Buon giorno! - Good day!

Fitz - Seems my instinct was right. [DM shrugs & looks at Watcher medallion.]9

Street near hotel 6

(resume previous scene)

DM - [having remembered where he's seen tattoo symbol before, looks around briefly] Fitz.

CUT

[DM runs back toward chapel as van drives off. He runs over & picks up Fitz's pipe from the street.]10

ACT TWO

Establishing shot: Quay by barge (from bridge) 1

<Bridge near barge 1 CUT

Hunter - [to man with camera, who is taking pictures of barge] {Let's go.} [They walk over to third man (Horton) & man with camera takes some more pictures.]

Horton - {Good shots?}>

Establishing shot: Quay by barge 1

Inside barge

<DM - CUT We should never have split up. I can't believe I fell for that, Tessa. It's the age-old rule: Divide and conquer.>

Tessa - [working on metal sculpture] Maybe they're working for some government.

DM - Yeah, well, that doesn't explain the tattoo. [slams book closed] Damn, I can't find that symbol anywhere!

Tessa - That man chose to die instead of talking to you. Mac, I'm scared.

DM - Well, you should be!

Tessa - [cuts hand on sculpture] Ouch! Ahh! [hisses in pain & holds hand] Ohh. [blows on cut]

DM - Let me have a look at it. That's a nasty cut.

Tessa - Yeah. Damn, it's bleeding. [sits on couch while DM brings over first aid kit]

DM - I'm sorry.

Tessa - Maybe they're working for an Immortal.

DM - Yeah, maybe. [digs around in kit] No, that can't happen. Darius was in a church. Even the most evil of us wouldn't desecrate holy ground. It looked as if they were searching for something in the rectory.

Tessa - What?

DM - [opening bandage] I don't know.

Tessa - If Darius knew what it was about, wouldn't he have told you?

DM - [quietly] Oh, sweetheart... [kisses her & grabs jacket]

Tessa - Where will you go?

DM - I'm going back to the rectory. CUT

Dock by barge 1

RR - [drives up on motorcycle, walks toward DM] Mac, I've been thinking about this... Fitzcairn had meetings with three other Immortals and they all disappeared, right?

<DM - Maybe he led them to Thackery without meaning to. CUT

RR - Wait, Fitzcairn came here. He didn't go to Darius. Why didn't they just go after him?

DM - [shows RR Fitz's pipe] They did.

RR - Ah, man, what's--

DM - Look, I don't have time to explain, all right? I think the answer's back at the rectory. [hugs RR] Take it easy, all right?

RR - Okay.

DM - Look after Tessa for me.

RR - I will. Mac, there's one thing I don't get though.> If these guys are just regular human beings, and they can't sense you Immortals, how do they know when they've found one?

[DM can't answer, just gets in his car.]

St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory 11

[Queen - "Who Wants to Live Forever"

There's no time for us
There's no place for us]

[DM picks up tea pot from shelf & examines it, remembering.]

Flashback: St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory
(from "The Beast Below")

Darius - Try some of this. [pours tea for them both]

DM - Oh, this isn't some more of your moss stuff, is it?

Darius - [reassuringly] No, no, no, no.

DM - I don't trust you. You sure it's not? [takes sip]

Darius - It's from a mold form. [DM spits tea out. Darius laughs & picks up teapot.] Some more?

DM - [making a face] No! No, no, no.

St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory 11

(resume previous scene)

[Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?]

[DM puts teapot back on cabinet shelf.]

[Ahh.
There's no chance for us]

Flashback: Waterloo, 1815
(from "Band of Brothers")

[It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment
Set aside for us]

DM - [carrying wounded comrade on his back, senses 'buzz' coming from hooded monk wandering among dead & dying, and reaches for his sword] I am Duncan MacLeod of the clan MacLeod.

Darius - I am Darius. You won't need that.

[Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?]

Darius - You shouldn't be taking part in this tragedy.

DM - I was raised a warrior. I choose battles I believe to be just.

Darius - Oh, I'm sure. You're quite loyal to your convictions and compatriots. But I wonder what these men think about that... about convictions and compatriotism now?

[When love must die]

St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory 11

(resume previous scene)

[Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?]

[DM looks around, rifles through belongings on desk.]

[Forever is our today]

[DM sits down by chess board.]

[Who waits forever anyway?]

Flashback: St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory
(from "For Tomorrow We Die")

DM - So, my old friend, how are we today?

Darius - [shrugs] Mmph.

DM - You ready for our game? Or are you afraid I'll finally beat you? [Darius doesn't answer.] What's the matter?

Darius - Sometimes being a Catholic priest is easier than other times.

DM - Anything you want to talk about?

Darius - Would that I could, my friend. Would that I could. [stands up] Now... to our game.

DM - I won't press, but if there's anything you need...

Darius - Yes, I know, but... some things must remain unsaid. [sits at chess board]

DM - Okay, so who's move is it?

Darius - It's yours.

DM - [takes off jacket, sits opposite Darius] Are you sure?

Darius - Yes, very. Good move now, huh? 1

St. Joseph's Chapel - rectory 11

(resume previous scene)

[DM is still sitting at chessboard, stands up. 2 He walks over to stylized metal globe, gives it a spin, then looks up & sees piece of MacLeod tartan stuck in niche in wall. He removes loose stone, reaches in, & pulls out old book. On inside of back cover is a faded Watcher symbol.]

DM - He knew.

Paris street 12

[Tessa walks past Horton. Horton nods at man on bike. Man & Horton both start moving toward Tessa. Man rings bicycle bell as he rides up behind her & Horton grabs her & pushes her aside, out of the way.]

Tessa - Ohh!

Horton - I'm sorry.

Tessa - It's okay. I didn't see him.

Horton - [picks up grocery bag & hands it to her] I startled you.

Tessa - Oh, thank you, thank you.

Horton - Oh, you've hurt your hand. Let me take a look at that.

Tessa - Well, it's -- it's just a cut.

Horton - No, no, I'm a doctor. I insist. [rips bandage away]

Tessa - Ohh!

Horton - I'm sorry. I've made it bleed again. Still, it looks quite healthy. You should be careful. Infections can lead to all kinds of nasty things. [leaves abruptly]

Establishing shot: Quay by barge 1

Inside barge

Tessa - He was one of them, wasn't he?

DM - He wanted to know if you were an Immortal. If you were, you would have healed more quickly.

Tessa - What if I was? They must have been following me all day, and I didn't see them.

DM - I think you only see these people when they want you to. Where's Richie?

Tessa - At the antique dealer. Rue de Moineau. I wanted to go, but he insisted. Why? CUT

<DM - Lock this place up tight, and don't let anybody in. Anybody.>

Street outside antique store 13

[RR exits store, gets on motorcycle, & drives away. A man watches him go. DM pulls up & goes into antique store. Same man watches him, too. DM comes back out & walks toward man, who pretends not to be paying any attention to him.]

DM - [to man] Nice day. [Man ignores him.] What do you want? [Man looks at him, then walks away. DM follows.] [speaks French] {??} Excusez-moi. Que voulez-vous? Parlez-vous francais? {??} [speaks German] Sprechen sie Deutsch? Deutsch? Mein Herr, sprechen sie Deutsch? Nein? [speaks Italian] {??} si parla italiano? Italiano? No? {??} [speaks Russian] Vy govarite Porusskii? No? Uh... [speaks Chinese] Ni-Shou-Jong-Wen-Ma?

Translations:
French - {??} Excuse me. What do you want? Do you speak French? {??}
German - Do you speak German? German? Sir, do you speak German? No?
Italian - {??} Do you speak Italian? Italian? No? {??}
Russian - Do you speak Russian?
Chinese (KNEE-swah-Jong-WHEN-Mah) - You understand Chinese?

[Suddenly DM is attacked by man wielding a machete & several others. He fights them off & pulls out katana.]

Bystander - What's going on?

Man at window - What's this?

[One attacker sprays mace at DM.]

DM - Ahh!

[DM goes down but continues fighting men off. Suddenly RR drives up on motorcycle & dumps it in a skid at attackers' feet, knocking two down. He jumps up & head-butts another man with motorcycle helmet, then kicks fourth & grabs nunchak from him.]

Bystanders - Hey, what is going on? What's going on here? Clear the yard!

[Faced with far too many witnesses, the Hunters retreat.]

DM - [to RR] Why'd you come back?

RR - Well, Mac, I'd, uh, I'd like to say I sensed you were in danger, but the truth is, there's this really cute blonde who works in the antique store.

<DM - CUT Great. I never thought I'd be thankful for your libido.>

ACT THREE

Establishing shot: Horton's hideout 14

Inside Horton's hideout 11

Fitz - [chained hand & foot between two stone pillars] Hey! What do they think they're playing at... Dungeons and Dragons? Hello?

[Men walk in & sit in chairs in front of him.]

Fitz - You killed Darius, and you took Thackery and the others. What do you want? [The men say nothing.] I know my countenance is pleasurable to the eye, but can't we discuss this? You'll find me a friendly sort of chap when you get to know me.

[Horton turns, nods at man behind him who is holding crossbow.]

Fitz - Damn you. [The man fires a bolt at him, killing him.]

Horton - Remove the arrow.

Hunter - Anton, make sure he's dead. Then we'll see if he's truly an Immortal.

Establishing shot: Quay by barge, night 1

Inside barge, night

DM - This book holds the key to what's going on. [sighs] Darius put my clan colors on it, so I'd find it.

Tessa - What's it say?

DM - Well, I'm not certain, but... most pages have been destroyed in some kind of fire. The ones left are handwritten in ancient German.

Tessa - But you speak German.

DM - This is primitive Teutonic, well before my time. It's a book on some kind of mythology.

Tessa - What kind of mythology?

DM - It speaks of, uh... battles, gods... and Immortality.

RR - It's a book about you guys?

Tessa - Written hundreds of years ago?

RR - What should we do?

<DM - CUT Well, I have to spend a little more time with this book.>

RR - You want me to do something?

DM - Yeah, hold down the fort.

RR - All right. You want company?

DM - No thanks, Rich.

RR - Okay. [to Tessa, as DM takes book over to bed] What's it like for him, Tess?

Tessa - What do you mean?

RR - To have a friend for two hundred years and then...

Tessa - I don't know.

Establishing shot: Horton's hideout 14

Inside Horton's hideout 11

Horton - So, you ARE one of them.

Fitz - You weren't sure, were you? It was a test. What if I'd been mortal? You would have murdered an innocent man, you ruthless bastard.

Horton - Where's the book?

Fitz - Who are you working for? One of us? Is that your game? How much is he paying you? [Horton slaps him.]

Horton - Where's the book?

Fitz - Book? What book?

Horton - The fifth chronicle.

Fitz - The fifth chronicle? What -- what are you talking about?

Horton - Don't lie to me. We know Darius had it.

Fitz - Now, look. Do I look like a fellow who's in any position to lie? [Horton grabs his collar, choking him.] You know, you really should do something about that temper of yours... 'cause one of these days, it's going to get you into terrible trouble.

Horton - I've often wondered how much pain an Immortal could bear... before he went... mad.

Paris street 15

[Hunter follows DM down sidewalk. DM bends over to "tie his shoe" & watches in parked car's side mirror as man slows down, pretending to look in shop window. Having identified his shadow, DM stands back up & continues down street. A man pushing a rack of clothes blocks Hunter's view of MacLeod. When he's past, MacLeod has disappeared. Hunter hurries down street, looking for DM. DM steps out of doorway behind him. Hunter turns & sees him, then runs for it, with DM in pursuit.]

Hunter - [runs up to man on motorcycle] Let's go! Let's go! Come on! [hops on back & they speed away]16

Establishing shot: Quay by barge, night 1

Barge - on deck, night 1

CUT

<[RR patrols the deck, carrying length of lead pipe. DM comes out of wheelhouse behind him & sneaks up on him, then blows on back of his neck to get his attention. RR turns & jumps in surprise upon finding him standing directly behind him.]

RR - Oh, yeah, like a sword is standard issue for home protection.>

DM - Where's Tessa?

RR - She's down below.

DM - Let's get inside. 3

Inside barge, night

DM - It's a book of observations on who we are, what we do.

RR - So, it's like a history book.

DM - Whoever wrote it was a historian, yeah. A secretary to a secret order of men who observed us but did nothing to interfere. That's why we didn't know about them.

RR - Mac, we gotta do something. They cannot just kill Darius and walk.

DM - We are doing something.

RR - What are we doing? It seems like we're just sitting here. It seems like we're doing nothing.

DM - We're waiting.

RR - What are we waiting for?

DM - These men leave nothing to chance. They observe before they strike.

Barge - on deck, night 1

[DM watches as car pulls up & stops under nearby bridge.]

Tessa - [joins him] You okay?

DM - Yeah, I'm fine.

Tessa - You don't have to be.

DM - Tessa, he's dead, and there's nothing I can do to bring him back. What else is there to say?

Tessa - You don't have to say anything. I just want you to let yourself mourn.

DM - I've buried more friends than I can count, Tess. Death is part of my life.

Tessa - Not his death.

DM - He was so wise. He taught me so much. [watches cigarette lighter flare in window of car under bridge] He wasn't supposed to die.

Tessa - I know.

DM - He was on holy ground, Tess. He should have been safe. He should have been safe. Come on. [leads her inside]

[some time later]

[RR walks along Seine from barge toward man smoking cigarette in car under bridge.]

RR - [stops & looks at bottom of shoe] Aw! Aw, man. Aw, what a mess. [continues toward car, ranting] Always people and their dogs. I can't believe -- can you believe this? Again and again. Uh, this always happens to me. Oh, this is disgusting. Always, all the time. Oh, get that stuff off me. [crouches down] Hey, do you got a Kleenex or something? [straightens up] Can you believe this? [He throws a rock at car windshield. While man inside is distracted by that, DM runs up & punches him through open driver's window & pulls him out of car.]

DM - Who are you? Why did you kill him? Talk to me! Why'd you kill Darius?! [Man spits at him, & DM knocks him unconscious.]

RR - Nothing in the car.

DM - Move the barge. CUT

[some time later]

Hunter - [wakes up, sees barge is gone] Damn. [gets back in car]

ACT FOUR

Establishing shot: Horton's hideout, night 14

Inside Horton's hideout 11

Horton - We have won a great victory. We have destroyed a malignant evil that has walked this earth in the form of a man for the last two thousand years. People do not cheer us. People do not even know we exist. But we know the battle we fight. We know the evil we must destroy. I would like to send you back to your homes... to your lives... but our work here is not finished. Bring him.

Fitz - [as two Hunters enter] Ah, come to play some more, hmm? [as men unchain him] Oh, it's about time you two fellows came to your senses. I'm sure we can come to some amicable arrangement. Take me to your master -- if you can get the lock off. [chuckles] And don't be so aggressive. Please be careful with my jacket. [The men pull him down staircase into room with guillotine.] Just a minute! This -- this is madness! There are no Immortals here! All I am will be wasted! What do you want? All I know will be lost. There will be no Quickening. What do you want?! You're mad!

Outside Horton's hideout, night 1

[Hunter from barge surveillance drives up, parks.]

Establishing shot: Horton's hideout, night 14

Outside Horton's hideout, night 1

[Hunter gets out of car, takes out cigarette.]

DM - [from behind him] Need a light? [The man turns & DM knocks him out.]

Inside Horton's hideout 11

Fitz - [senses DM's 'buzz'] You're making a great mistake. I've been friends to generations of men. <Your grandfathers. Your great-grandfathers. CUT I've slain tyrants who would have made slaves of your enemies.> You ungrateful encephalopods.

Horton - You are an abomination before nature and in the eyes of man. There is no glory but ours. No destiny that is not of our making. [nods to his men, who stick Fitz's head under guillotine blade]

Fitz - Ah, well. If it's time to go, ah, it's been a grand romp. Oh, the stories I could tell you, lads. I don't suppose you've got time to listen? Do I get a last request?

Horton - No.

Fitz - And you call yourself human?

Horton - What is it?

Fitz - A last smoke of my pipe.

Horton - I don't think so.

[A knife whizzes through the air & kills Hunter at guillotine lever.]

Fitz - MacLeod, what kept you?

DM - [fighting Hunters, runs up staircase, luring one of the Hunters after him] I'm over here. [takes out Hunter on stairs] It's not so easy, one on one, is it?

Horton - [yelling at one of his men] Hey, guillotine!

Fitz - MacLeod!

[DM throws nunchak, knocks out man heading for guillotine. Horton shoots DM with tazer. DM reaches into his coat, pulls out katana, cuts tazer wire.]

DM - Is that how you killed Darius?

Horton - I'm unarmed.

DM - You hate us, but you expect us to behave honorably. Why is that?

Horton - When you kill me, others will come to continue what we have begun.

DM - I'm not your enemy. This isn't about mortals. We have our own fight! Don't you understand?!

Horton - We've always understood. We will never be dominated.

DM - No one wants to dominate you.

Horton - Liar! We know about the Gathering.

DM - Do you sense evil in me? Talk to me! Tell me what you know!

Horton - It's about power! There is nothing greater than the power of man! Nothing! You must die... all of you. [He swings at DM with an axe. DM ducks & Horton hits one of his men instead.]

Fitz - MacLeod! [DM punches out man trying to engage guillotine. Horton runs away.] What took you so long? This thing makes me nervous. Get me out of it. [DM releases Fitz.] The women of the world will thank you, my friend.

TAG

Inside barge, night

Tessa - [quietly] You have it?

DM - Mm-hm. [nods] Where's Richie? I think Darius would want him to be here.

Tessa - He knows. He'll be right in. [goes to him] I know you'll never have another friend like Darius. I'm sorry. CUT

<DM - I'll find him one day... or he'll find me.> 4

Barge - on deck, night 1

DM - Fifteen hundred years ago, you led an army of barbarians to the gates of Paris. You disbanded your army and spared the city. But you broke a promise to yourself. To march west from the Ural mountains until you'd reached the sea. [takes lid off urn, squats at edge of barge] So now, old friend... travel on. [reaches into urn] Go where you never went... [scatters handful of ashes into Seine] ...to the sea. [scatters two more handfuls] 5 [as RR, Tessa & Fitz watch] ...travel on. Go where you never went... 6 (this is an alternate, shorter shot NOT in the DVD version)

[Who wants to live forever?]

DM - [empties ashes into Seine] I'll miss you.
