Episode 13: Bless the Child

SCENE ONE

 
MacLEOD - You hungry?

CHARLIE - You kidding? I could eat a horse.

[MacLeod flips something out of the frying pan and onto a plate and hands it to Charlie, who just stands there staring at it. There's a fried trout in the middle of his plate. He makes a not-pleased face.]

MacLEOD - You don't like fish?

CHARLIE - Not for breakfast.

[MacLeod helps himself to Charlie's trout. Suddenly the sound of a roaring engine disturbs the morning calm.]

SCENE TWO

EXT. CRASH SITE – THE PICKUP

[Is resting upright, smashed beyond recognition. Thick black smoke billows from its hood.]

[MacLeod and Charlie approach the truck, waving the smoke away. MacLeod tries to open the door but it's stuck. With Charlie's help, they manage to force it open. Tall, menacing flames appear beneath the hood.]

[In the truck - MacLeod grabs Sara, pulls her from the wreck. Charlie, on the other side, grabs a knapsack from the seat. MacLeod hurries Sara away from the wreck. Her jeans are torn, cuts and scratches on her face. She opens her eyes, looks up at MacLeod and Charlie.]

SCENE THREE

EXT. MOUNTAIN ROAD / CRASH SITE – DAY

[A four-wheel drive truck with a back window gun rack rolls to a stop at the spot where the pickup went off the dirt road. The door opens and out comes Avery Hoskins. Also in the truck are Billy and Luke. They look down at the burning wreck. Hoskins starts to move down the slope. Billy grabs his arm.]

BILLY - [with feigned sincerity] They couldn't live through that, Avery. Let them be.

HOSKINS - [pulling away] Not till I see for myself.

[Anger and fear flash across Hoskins' leathery face as he rushes down the slope.]

BILLY - [calling after Hoskins] Avery, wait up!

[Hoskins leans into the smoldering pickup carcass and looks around. When he comes back out, there's a tight grin on his face.]

HOSKINS - [relieved] Looks like they got out okay. [Hoskins moves up to the road. Billy curses and follows.] They can't be very far.

 

EXT. MacLEOD's CAMPSITE – DAY

MacLEOD - [piling things into the jeep] You almost done, Charlie?

CHARLIE - [looks up from the engine] Five more minutes and it'll be as good as new.

[Off screen, the sound of distant car doors slamming. MacLeod and Charlie share a look.]

SCENE FOUR

 
HOSKINS - [throws Billy a hard look] What the hell'd you do that for? He knows where Jamie is.

SCENE FIVE

 
LUKE - And there's not two, there's three of 'em. Sara and two men.

SCENE SIX

 
HOSKINS - [off Billy's look] We'll mourn later.

SCENE SEVEN

 
CHARLIE - We carry the blood of two different worlds.

[Sara just looks at him. Doesn't know what he means.]

CHARLIE - He's a half-breed, like me.

SARA - Oh . . . that's right. [She smiles up at Charlie tiredly.]

CHARLIE - And don't worry.

SCENE EIGHT

SCENE NINE

 
CHARLIE - Right. I knew that. [He tries to feed the baby again. The baby still refuses.] Can I have some?

[Charlie fakes drinking from the bottle himself. The baby starts to cry. MacLeod approaches him to see if he can help. And then, all of a sudden, it hits him.]

MacLEOD - He's not hungry.

CHARLIE - How do you know?

MacLEOD - You're looking at the wrong end.

SCENE TEN

 
MacLEOD - Get me a diaper and some wipes.

[Charlie reaches into Sara's bag, hands MacLeod the requested items. As MacLeod changes the baby, Charlie watches.]

MacLEOD - Now, isn't this better?

CHARLIE - [impressed] You look like a pro to me.

SCENE ELEVEN

 
[Charlie looks at MacLeod's face, waiting. But MacLeod isn't handing out any clues. Instead, he reaches down and takes the infant's tiny hand in his and looks at his face.]

SCENE TWELVE

 
MacLEOD - Will you be quiet. You want to get us pinched?

NORA - [whispering] Only if they let us spend the night in the same cell.

[MacLeod shushes her. A moment later an off-screen hand turns the doorknob.]

OFFSCREEN COP - C'mon, Keegan . . . Captain says we got enough.

[The knob stops turning. Footsteps can be heard moving away.]

NORA - Duncan. [beat] Will you marry me?

SCENE THIRTEEN

 
CHARLIE - I hope you're not lookin' for a gun, because I know there isn't one in there.

SCENE FOURTEEN

EXT. WOODS – ELSEWHERE

[Billy, Mike and J.J. are awakened by Hoskins, who's ready to hit the trail. The dogs are nearby.]

HOSKINS - Let's go. [beat] It's almost dawn.

SCENE FIFTEEN

 
CHARLIE - The lady's an Indian.

SCENE SIXTEEN

 
MacLEOD - She must be moving towards the hills.

SCENE SEVENTEEN

Scene ends with DM saying "She can't be far."

SCENE EIGHTEEN

 
MacLEOD - Let's go.

[Sara scoops up the baby and they run through the woods.]

SCENE NINETEEN

Scene ends with Charlie's line.

SCENE TWENTY
(In the shooting script, Billy's gun goes off when he struggles with MacLeod.)

 
BILLY - Dammit, I had her!

J.J. - We heard a shot. You get 'em?

BILLY - Does it look like I got anybody? [beat] Where the hell were you guys?

SCENE TWENTY-ONE

Shooting script scene starts with DM pulling himself onto the ledge.

SCENE TWENTY-TWO

 
MacLEOD - Just give me your hand. [She reaches up again. MacLeod leans down even more and takes her hand.] Now, find the ledge with your foot . . .

[Sara's foot scrapes the face of the rock, finds a crack and slips inside. Sara looks relieved.]

MacLEOD - Okay, here we go.

[MacLeod pulls her to safety. Terrified, Sara collapses on the ledge, hugging the mountain next to Charlie.]

 

EXT. TOP OF RIDGE

[Billy, standing close to the edge with his rifle, looks down into the canyon at MacLeod, Sara and Charlie, a hundred feet below, inching their way up. Suddenly MacLeod looks up, his eyes going straight to Billy. Billy pulls away from the ledge, angry at having been seen. He turns to the ranch hand by his side.]

BILLY - Got 'em.

 

EXT. RIDGE – LEDGE – DAY

[MacLeod reacts to what he's seen and turns to face the others, precariously perched on a piece of rock.]

CHARLIE - How much more of this is there, MacLeod?

MacLEOD - That's it for now. We won't be climbing any higher.

SARA - Why?

MacLEOD - Because they're waiting.

SCENE TWENTY-THREE

 
HOSKINS - Now you'll tell me my brother's a liar.

MacLEOD - Somebody is.

HOSKINS - [with a tight smile] And I'm supposed to believe you?
 

BACK to transcript.

 

SCENE TWENTY-FOUR

 
HOSKINS - You can tell Sara I'm not pressing charges. There's been enough grief 'round here already.

MacLEOD - I'll do that.

[MacLeod shakes Hoskins' hand.]

 

EXT. RANCH HOUSE – DRIVEWAY

[Macleod walks to the end of the driveway, gets into the jeep with Charlie.]

CHARLIE - I guess this is where we ride off into the sunset, huh?

MacLEOD - It's the middle of the night, Charlie.

[But when Charlie turns the key in the ignition, the engine won't turn over. Macleod, deadpan, turns to Charlie.]

MacLEOD - Next time maybe we should try using a horse.

[Charlie breaks into a smile.]
