Episode 1: The Watchers

SCENE ONE

 
JOEY - I said I wasn't done, you greasy bastard.

[MacLeod and Richie turn to the table with four skinheads and see a single frightened Arab Busboy standing with a dishtub full of glasses.]

BUSBOY - I'm sorry, but we are closing. I must pick up the glasses.

JOEY - [smiling] Then pick them up.

[Joey grabs the tub and hurls it to the floor. Broken glass is everywhere. MacLeod calmly rises. Joey grabs the busboy by the scruff of the neck and pushes him toward the glass.]

BUSBOY - [terrified] Please, no . . .

JOEY - With your tongue.

[As he looks to his friends for approval, MacLeod's voice catches their attention.]

MacLEOD - Let him go.

[They turn to find MacLeod moving toward them slowly.]

MacLEOD - [smiling coldly] Now.

[Joey lets go of the Busboy, who moves out of harm's way.]

JOEY - Maybe you want to take his place.

SCENE TWO

 
MacLEOD - [with a smile] Is that a threat?

TESSA - [beat] These things are not my life. [beat] You are.

SCENE THREE
(in original script, Joe's name was Ian Dawson)

 
[Ian takes the book and opens it. His eyes linger on MacLeod's face for a moment longer than necessary.]

MacLEOD - [re book] Can you?

IAN - [covering] I didn't mean to stare . . . It's an old habit. [His attention returns to the book.]

SCENE FOUR
(in original script, Joe's name was Ian Dawson)

 
IAN - Something wrong?

[MacLeod lowers the glasses and pulls out a tissue to wipe them.]

MacLEOD - No, just dirty. [He wipes the lenses, smiles.]

SCENE FIVE
(in original script, Joe's name was Ian Dawson)

 
[MacLeod takes a step toward Ian, challenging.]

MacLEOD - I think it's time for a few answers.

IAN - In a moment. [He turns to Belson, who is struggling to his feet.] Why are you watching him? He was with me.

BELSON - We tracked him from the airport. When he went into the bookstore, we got worried . . .

IAN - About what? This is MacLeod. I'm in no danger. [Belson starts to sidle away. MacLeod stiff-arms him against the wall. Belson drops to his knees.]

MacLEOD - [to Ian, menacing] I wouldn't be too sure of that.

IAN - But I am. Adopted son of Malcolm and Mary.

SCENE SEVEN

INT. ANTIQUE STORE – DAY

[Tessa and Richie enter. The shelves are bare. All has been packed away in storage. Richie looks around. The place is dust-filled and mostly empty, except for a few draped items that weren't shipped to storage. He runs a finger over a dirty counter-top.]

RICHIE - When's the cleaning service coming?

TESSA - [reaches for a mop and hands it to Richie] They're here. [beat] C'mon, let's get to work. The trucks should be showing up any minute. I want the place clean before Duncan comes back.

SCENE EIGHT
(in original script, Joe's name was Ian Dawson)

INT. BOOK STORE – BACK ROOM

[MacLeod and Ian enter a simple room with a desk, a filing cabinet, and a computer. There is a bookshelf with a variety of eclectic items. Ian slips a floppy disc into the computer.]

IAN - Choose an Immortal.

MacLEOD - What?

IAN - Any one you know, living or dead. [off Mac's hesitation] Go on.

MacLEOD - The Kurgan.

[Ian moves to the computer and types in a command. A printer instantly prints out a page. Ian tears it off and reads from it with a hint of pride.]

SCENE NINE

 
LYNN - He has a business degree.

SCENE TEN

LYNN - [beat, smiles] Let's not overdo it. A B.A. in fine arts doesn't exactly secure my future.

IAN - [beaming] The world's great galleries will be beating down your door.

LYNN - Along with the repo man taking my car.

TESSA - You've always had a way with words, Richie.

SCENE TWELVE

 
RICHIE - [beat] I wonder what it's like being him.

TESSA - Duncan?

RICHIE - Seeing all he's seen. Being Immortal. I wonder what it feels like to know you might live forever.

TESSA - We'll never know . . .

[Richie nods in agreement.]

SCENE THIRTEEN
(in original script, Joe's name was Ian Dawson)

INT. HALLWAY

[The elevator doors open and MacLeod steps out to see Ian and other guests enter, many in their early twenties, but quite a few middle aged guests as well. They enter in small groups. Ian arrives behind the last group, rings the bell, and waits. A tall man, HORTON, answers the door, sees Ian, and gives him a friendly hug. They speak quietly.]

[From a distance, MacLeod watches. His eyes blaze at the sight of Horton.]

 

INT. PARIS TOWNHOUSE – CELLAR – NIGHT

[Horton's face, but this time it's in Paris, as he confronts MacLeod under very different circumstances.]

(Flashback from "The Hunters")

 

INT. HALLWAY

[Horton, his arm around Ian, escorts him into the party. MacLeod moves toward the door of Horton's condo, his face set in anger.]

IAN - He only killed men in self defense and as a last resort.
